Eileen Lorraine
Jeanette Mathiason
August 11, 1934 — December 24, 2022
East Grand Forks
Eileen Lorraine Jeanette Mathiason, 88, passed away on December 24, 2022 at the Edgewood Vista Memory Care, East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Eileen was born on August 11, 1934 in Warren, MN to William and Pearl (Andreason) Larson. Unfortunately, Eileen's mother died when she was three years old. She was then raised by her widowed father and aunts and uncles. She graduated from Warren High School in 1953. On June 15, 1955 she married Marvin Mathiason and they continued to live in the Warren area. In 1965 they moved to Key West, MN area where they lived for 50 years.
Eileen loved keeping an immaculate home, loving her children and all their friends. Making brownies was her specialty and everyone who had one came back for more. She loved taking fresh chocolate chip cookies out of the oven just as her children were coming off the bus! She also took great care in loving others with phone calls, sending cards and baking.
She was a member of the First Church of God for many years and was currently attending services at Hope Church and enjoyed coming every Sunday.
Eileen's passion was her flower garden. She tended her manicured yard and flower garden daily. You could see her picking weeds most anytime. Her favorite time was spring when the birds came back to sing their songs.
Marvin and Eileen sold their country home near Key West after Marvin was diagnosed with cancer and they moved into the Good Samaritan Heritage Grove apartments in East Grand Forks, MN. When Marvin passed, Eileen's children made sure she was taken care of. She lived independently until she needed more assistance and moved into an assisted living apartment at Good Samaritan. Her memory started to fade and was then moved to Edgewood Memory Care.
Eileen was a loving wife to Marvin for almost 60 years, loved her five children and their spouses unconditionally, and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She didn't have a mean bone in her body, always had a hug for everyone, and was happy-go-lucky up to her last day on earth. Her faith was strong and she looked forward to the day she could meet her Lord.
Eileen is survived by her children (the 5 J's): Judy (Merle) Shuck, Kennedy, MN; James Mathiason, Grand Forks, ND; Jerry (Kim) Mathiason, East Grand Forks, MN; Janelle (Al) Hogenson, West Fargo, ND; and Jon (Rita) Mathiason, Greenfield, MN; 12 grandchildren; Amy (Aaron) Barthel, Christine Shuck, Heather (David) Dunn, Robert and Derek Hogenson, Alex (Delaney) Hogenson, Zach (Brenna) Mathiason, Syn Mathiason, Jared (Cadee) Mathiason, Tiara, Kiah, and Jacob Mathiason, and eight great-grandchildren; Alquin and Andrew Barthel, Trevor, Tyson and Brooke Dunn, Harlee Sears, Lucas Mathiason, and Smith Hogenson, brother-in-law Allard (Barbara) Mathiason, Seattle, WA, sister-in-law Muriel (Richard) Bland, Baxley, GA. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Marvin and sister-in-law Alice.
