Obituary

Gail I. Hobus "Gigs," age 64 , of East Grand Forks, MN, passed away Saturday, December 27, 2025 at Altru Hospital of Grand Forks, ND.

Gail Inez Grenier was born September 18, 1961 in Crookston, MN, to Joseph and Carol (Wigand) Grenier. She grew up in East Grand Forks and graduated from the Senior High School in 1980 where she was a member of one of East Grand Fork's first girls'hockey teams.

She worked at Hershes Dairy Queen throughout her teenage years. She attended Northland technical college AVTI for accounting and business in 1981. On August 10, 1984, Gail was united in marriage to Charles Hobus at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. They made their home in East Grand Forks and were blessed with her first child Casey. Gail loved being a mom. She then was blessed with her second child Kayla four years later.

Gail spent her time at home with her children; she welcomed all of her kid's friends, nieces and nephews into her home and treated them like her own, making her house "the fun house". She was referred to as the "2nd mom".

She attended all of her kids' sports games, programs, traveling baseball for her son, and her daughter's love for hockey like her.

She traveled to Sturgis with her husband in the summers riding on the back of their Harley motorcycle while she enjoyed the scenery.

Gail loved to have fun, she enjoyed camping and going to maple lake on the boat while taking the kids tubing.

Gail spent most of her career working for East Grand Forks Public Schools with a majority at New Heights as a para and as she would call it, "a self-proclaimed Custodial Engineer."

She was a hard worker and helped all of the teachers with projects she would bring home to finish for them, laminating, finishing up their work that they didn't have enough time for just to help. who never complained despite battling cancer for over 30 years and received chemo treatments every three weeks. The Altru cancer center nurses were like family to her and always brought her Hot chocolate and a warmed-up blanket while she received her treatments. She took part in the Relay for Life cancer walk at university park for years.

Gail always had a smile on her face and enjoyed aggravating her husband. She had a fun sense of humor. It was never a dull moment with Gail, she was full of life, and would always make you laugh and feel loved. Nothing brought her greater joy than her 7 grandchildren. She would make her home on holidays filled with love, food and treats.

She also attended all of their school functions and sports. She was the go-to-babysitter. Her love for her first-born granddaughter Cora, in 2006 was one of the many reasons she fought her cancer battles, and stated that she had to keep going to see her graduate. She was a warrior and a fighter. She lived her life to the fullest. And will be greatly missed by many, and all who loved her dearly.

Gail is survived by her husband Charles Hobus; children Casey (Cassandra) Hobus and Kayla Hobus (Mat Pavlish); seven grandchildren Cora, Carter, Masen, Rylee, Asher, Hallie and Sawyer all of East Grand Forks; siblings Wendy Jo Wilson (Tim) of Mesa, AZ, David (Dawn) Grenier of Cypress, TX, Diane "Duke" (Jack) Deziel of East Grand Forks; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Carol Grenier and her big brother John boy Grenier.
