Grand Forks
Lois (Loey) Estelle Seeger was born in Radium, MN on March 25, 1931 to Hazel (Yuergens) Schantzen and Joseph Schantzen. Loey grew up on the farm loving horses, gardening, and dancing. She attended school in Radium, Minnesota.
At 20 years of age Loey moved to Grand Forks, ND. She worked in jewelry sales and service at D-K Jewelers and Lloyd's Jewelry for a combined 42 years, retiring in 1991.
In 1953, Loey met George Seeger at a dance at Kulseth's Dance Pavilion, and it was love at first sight. They were united in marriage the following summer in St. Peter & Paul's Catholic Church, Warren, MN. They lived in Red Lake Falls, MN before settling in Grand Forks. They had three children: a son, Rory; daughters, Michelle, and Robin.
Loey and George were foundational members of Holy Family Catholic Church in Grand Forks. Loey was an active member of the altar society, serving on the funeral committee, fellowship committee, and embroidered baptismal bibs.
She and George maintained the Job Service of North Dakota building and grounds. This was a family chore time that instilled a strong work ethic in all three children.
Lois became a Foster Grandparent working with her daughter, Michelle, in the libraries of East Grand Forks Public Schools. She had a special ability to connect with students of all ages, listening to them read and helping with assignments. The children loved Grandma because of her kind, caring attention and genuine concern for their well-being. She received the Starfish Award by Polk County Foster Grandparent Program in 2013 for her thousands of hours of service and positive impact on students.
Loey had many interests throughout her life. She enjoyed many types of handiwork, such as sewing, embroidery, crocheting, and quilting. She and her sister, Joyce "Sis" enjoyed ceramics together. Loey had a green thumb. Her flower gardens were a sight to behold. She was also a wonderful cook and baker.
Loey had a special gift of connecting with people. She showed true interest and concern for all she met. She was a wonderful conversationalist and attentive listener.
Loey will be forever loved and remembered by her three children: Rory, Crystal, ND, Michelle (Chris) Larsen, Grand Forks, Robin (John) Nord, Dallas, TX; her grandchildren: Andrew Larsen, Nick Larsen, Erin (Matt) Hainut, Kelsey (Quint) Mojzak, great grandchildren: Miles Hainut and Ethan Hainut, sisters-in-laws, Minerva Schantzen, Evie Schantzen, and many special nieces and nephews.
