Robert "Bob"
Lavoie
March 11, 1945 — February 10, 2021
East Grand Forks
way on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at his home after a lengthy battle with COPD and Alzheimer's Disease.
Bob LaVoie was born March 11, 1945 in Cloquet, MN the son of Clement and Blanche (Carrier) LaVoie. He grew up in Cloquet, MN and graduated from Cloquet High School with the Class of 1963. He then was recruited to play football by the University of North Dakota where he also earned his teaching degree. He married the love of his life Judith Myrvik in Grand Forks, ND on October 21, 1977. He taught school and coached for the East Grand Forks School district for 35 years until his retirement in 2002. Bob loved all sports and was a multisport athlete himself. In addition to playing football since he was 9 years old, he was a hockey goalie, threw shotput in track, and was the catcher on the softball team while in high school. He continued his softball playing after high school and played in an International Softball Tournament and the 1964 World's Softball Championship in California. He bled Green as a UND Alum and EGF Greenwave coach. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and family - from the hunting shack he shared with some co-workers to the trailer he shared with his family. He shared this love with his son and daughter and taught them to love the outdoors as much as he did. He will be remembered by his many friends, former students and athletes for his ability to tell jokes. The LaVoie joke is legendary. He would spend every morning golfing with his buddies at Valley Golf Course. When he became less mobile he would spend nice days sitting out on the porch waving as all his neighbors walked by, especially Sadie and Sweetie and their humans Jeff and Theresa. His buddy Tele the pug sometimes would sit on the porch with him and bark as those same neighbors went by. They are probably sitting on the porch in heaven together right now.
He is survived by his wife Judy of East Grand Forks, MN; son Shawn (Christine Maszk) LaVoie of Mesa, AZ; daughter Robyn (Eric) Toutenhoofd of Grand Forks, ND; 6 grandchildren, Taylor, Rainey, Jace, Luke, Drew and Madison; 1 sister Joan Nordin of Cloquet, MN; God Son, Jonathan Sheard; and many cherished nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, and 1 brother C. Eugene LaVoie.
