Steven James
Bakken
January 29, 1976 — January 11, 2023
Grand Forks
Steven James Bakken, 46, of Grand Forks, died at home on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 after a long struggle with alcoholism and its effects. Steve was born on January 29, 1976, to Jerome and Teresa Bakken in Grand Forks. After graduation from Central High School in 1994, Steve attended the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1999. Steve was interested in talking to anyone about any subject, but within one minute of conversation it would be clear to them that Steve LOVED music. It was an early and never-ending passion, with piano and guitar lessons at a young age and his first rock band around sixth grade. He could explain complex facets of music theory off the top of his head and loved experimenting with sounds, like dropping paper clips down on the strings of the family upright piano to make it sound like a harpsichord. Steve was exceptionally talented. Over the years, he taught himself multiple instruments and wrote countless songs. He loved the music scene in Minneapolis, where he spent many years. He was also a talented cook, artist, and chess player. Steve was preceded In death by his mother Teresa, his grandparents, and several dear friends. He is survived by his father Jerome Bakken of Grand Forks, his sister Anne Bakken (Kevin Dobmeier) of Pennsylvania, his uncle John Westrem of East Grand Forks, numerous cousins, and many more friends who will remember him as the smart, funny, curious, gifted person that he was. In lieu of flowers, please treat a loved one to something special, or send a memorial to the Great Plains Food Bank.
