William "Bill"
Jon Mero
November 19, 1953 — October 15, 2024
East Grand Forks
William "Bill" J. Mero, age 70 of East Grand Forks, MN passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.
William "Bill" Jon Mero was born on November 19, 1953 in Grand Forks, ND the son of Gerald and Vivian (Burt) Mero. Bill grew up in East Grand Forks, MN and attended school, graduating from East Grand Forks Senior High School. On June 9, 1984 he was united in marriage to Diane Gust at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in East Grand Forks and together they had one son, Beau. Bill worked for Acme Electric in Grand Forks, ND for 48 years before retiring in 2020.
Bill is known for many things: a devoted husband and father, hunter, fisherman, hockey player, die-hard Golden Gopher fan, but he may be best known for being a fighter.
First diagnosed with cancer in 1997, he has spent the last 3 decades fighting to stay here for his wife and son. A little over a year ago, his wife, Diane, left us unexpectedly. He lost a lot of fight that day.
Despite many setbacks and declining health in the past month, his sense of humor was evident until the very end. He was a fun-loving man who knew how to have a good time; especially with family. Many stories from hunting weekends at "the shack" that are now sacred to its members: his son, brother-in-laws and nephews. And although he was a guy's guy, he had a sweet spot in his heart for his nieces.
In the last year, Bill spent as much time as possible with his two favorite people: his son and daughter-in-law. He was a proud grandpaw to their dog Mauer, and loved spending time with them at the lake. He appreciated the outdoors and passed that love on to his son.
Bill didn't want any bells and whistles for his funeral. Like how he lived his life, he asked that it be simple, and didn't want anyone to make a fuss for him. He wouldn't want us to be sad for too long; he is happily with his sweetheart once again.
Family members who survive Bill include his Son Beau (Cheryl) Mero of East Grand Forks, MN; granddog, Mauer; siblings, John (Diane) Mero, Steve Mero, Roxine (Martin) Egeland all of East Grand Forks, MN, Rhonda Mero of Buffalo, MN and Sandy Comeau of Leominster, MA and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Diane on June 28, 2023, sister, Linda Mero and brother Larry Mero.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Altru Cancer Center in honor of Bill.
